Innocent Till Proven Guilty

Presumption of innocence is a legal right and given in criminal trials. It states that no person shall be considered guilty until finally convicted by a court. The burden of proof is thus on the prosecution, which has to convince the court that the accused is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.  As soon as information is available I will post it.

Cherish & Anna’s Journey to Heartland

On Friday, November 2011 Heartland Farm Sanctuary staff drove to Jackson County Humane Society in Black River Falls to rescue 2 of 67 animals seized earlier this month from a residence near Melrose WI for felony animal neglect. Owners were Tarry and Renee Smithey.

Meet Cherish

Cherish is a 2 year old female horse who, when originally found at the residence, was unable to stand up on her own. She suffered from malnourishment, dehydration, skin problems and suspected hip fractures. Cherish has gained 70 pounds since the 2 weeks of being in protective custody, most likely due to re-hydration and adequate feed hay.

Meet Anna

Anna, a 2 year old female mule was also removed suffering from malnourishment, dehydration and severely overgrown hooves, which Jackson County Humane Officer Barb Pfaff explained as “the worst case of hooves I’ve ever seen on an animal”. Anna may also have ligament damage in her lower legs due to the severe overgrowth.

Home at Heartland

As much as these two animals have been through, they are showing Heartland staff a lot of love and have a great interest in people. Once recovered, these animals will help countless neglected and abused youth who visit the Heartland Barn. Youth will be able to relate to these animals stories and will help them find the strength to heal from their own troubled past. For more photos, please visit the “Cherish & Anna’s Journey to Heartland” album on our Facebook page.

ASPCA Raids AR Puppy Mill, Rescues 175 Small Dogs

Puppy Rescued from Hot Springs, Arkansas Puppy MillRoughly 175 Westies, Boston Terriers, Pomeranians and other small dogs are receiving care and attention at a temporary shelter—and their owner is facing cruelty charges—after the ASPCA helped law enforcement raid a Hot Springs, Arkansas, puppy mill on November 7.

The breeding dogs, some with tiny, unweaned puppies, had been living in sheds outside a mobile home. Responders found them suffering from various eye diseases, dental disease, skin diseases, fleas, mites and heartworm.

The raid stemmed from a two-year investigation led by Corporal Angela Graybeal, a Garland County sheriff’s investigator who received numerous complaints about the living conditions and mistreatment of the puppy mill dogs.

The investigation culminated Monday morning with the arrest of mill owner Pam Thomas on three felony counts of animal cruelty.

Soon after the arrest, our veterinary forensics team and volunteers from the International Fund for Animal Welfare began combing the property to collect evidence, including several deceased dogs. At the same time, the ASPCA Field Investigations and Response (FIR) Team began removing dogs from the puppy mill. The team transported the dogs to a temporary shelter using the ASPCA’s custom animal transport trailer.

Once the dogs arrived at the temporary shelter, a veterinary team led by FIR Medical Director Dr. Rhonda Windham began assessing and treating the dogs’ medical conditions. The dogs are also receiving toys, affection and healthy food from a sheltering team of roughly 30 people who are using supplies donated by PetSmart Charities, Inc.

The dogs will not be immediately available for adoption because they are part of a criminal investigation.

Kentucky Woman Patricia Blevins Charged in Puppy Mill Case

puppy mill dog being held
The ASPCA is committed to puppy mill victims like this one, rescued in Holly Springs, MS, in 2010.

Earlier this month, News Alert reported that the ASPCA Field Investigations and Response Team was on the ground in Rowan County, Kentucky, caring for more than 100 dogs rescued from a puppy mill. Soon after, the owner of those dogs, Patricia Blevins, was arrested. She now faces a whopping 46 counts of animal cruelty. Blevins, 58, was arrested on October 19 and spent a night in jail before being released on bail. She is charged with 46 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty and one count of kennel mismanagement related to keeping more than 100 dogs in overcrowded conditions outside her mobile home in Morehead.

"The ASPCA commends the Rowan County Attorney's Office for taking swift action in pursuing this case," says Kyle Held, ASPCA Midwest Director of Field Investigations and Response. "We're pleased that they're treating the issue of puppy mills with the seriousness it deserves." This isn’t Blevins’ first time in court for animal cruelty; she was reportedly charged with the crime in 2004, but the charges against her were dropped when her husband was convicted. Says Held: “We hope that justice is served so the dogs can move on toward a better life soon."

Because the dogs are part of an ongoing criminal investigation, they are not yet available for adoption, but they are already worlds away from the unsanitary and claustrophobic conditions they lived in before their rescue. Today, they are being cared for by ASPCA responders and volunteers from Red Rover and other organizations, receiving veterinary care, treats, toys and loads of human kindness.

Milan Rysa is charged with killing his dog Brooklyn by throwing him out the window.

Milan Rysa is charged with killing his dog Brooklyn by throwing him out the window. A hotheaded Queens bodybuilder killed his dog by tossing it out of a third-floor window - then played dumb, telling cops he was asleep the whole time. Milan Rysa, 30, hurled Brooklyn, a Chinese Shar-Pei weighing about 50 pounds, out of his apartment on Steinway St. in Astoria as he played thumping dance music about 8:30 p.m Monday, police and witnesses said. "I saw it coming out the window," a shocked witness said, declining to give his name. "I heard the yelp when it hit the ground. I heard the thud. It just missed a woman." Witnesses said Rysa looked out the window, saw a crowd gathering near Brooklyn's broken body, then shut off the music and the apartment's lights. Cops, not sure what they would encounter inside the apartment, armed themselves with a battering ram and bulletproof shields, witnesses said.

A tiny body bag covered the dog's dead body in the street. (Sam Costanza for News)

He was booked for aggravated animal cruelty and reckless endangerment, and taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center for a psychiatric evaluation. His Facebook page abounds with shirtless, beefcake photos of himself. But it also includes an album called "My Lil Bad Boy" that shows Brooklyn as an adorable puppy. "The poor thing wanted to play all the time," the neighbor said.

Billie Joe Taylor
Billie Joe Taylor
Boynton Beach Police Dept.

— A 25-year-old man has been charged with two counts of unlawful confinement of animals after officers found him housing his pit bulls in deplorable conditions. The officer found a black adult pit bull confined in a chain-link kennel in Taylor's back yard and his two pit bull puppies, named Bonnie and Clyde, sitting in their own feces inside cages. The puppies, which Taylor said were his Christmas present from last year, were "frantically whining and crying," the officer wrote in a probable cause affidavit. "I had great concern for the immediate well-being of the dogs," the officer wrote.

With a police officer, Animal Care and Control officer Liz Roehrich entered the back yard and found a "putrid stench of feces/urine permeated the porch and surrounding areas," the affidavit says.

These 2 are responsible for many Crush videos. THEY ARE finally are caught!!!!!!

The two notorious suspects in producing a series of films showing animals being tortured and crushed to death has been arrested in La Union province. Animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of AnimalsPETA) shared some details about the manhunt operation for the couple Victor and Dorma Ridon. (

"Dorma (“Chita”) and Vicente Ridon, the couple charged with crimes related to the production of a series of "crush" videos in which scantily clad young girls engage in the torture killing of animals, were arrested by the police early on Tuesday morning in Burgos. The arrests came as the result of a year-long investigation by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Asia and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI). The Ridons, who have posted bail, have been charged with violations of child abuse (RA 7610) and animal welfare (RA 8485) laws. They are expected to face trial within the year." "PETA's hotline received more than 200 reports in the week following the group's appeal for help. "

"The vicious disregard for the animal suffering shown in these sadistic videos must be severely punished," says PETA Asia's campaigns manager, Rochelle Regodon. "This is a warning to anyone who would commit cruelty-to-animals crimes: The public takes it seriously and will do all it can to see justice served."

"The "crush" videos depict extreme cruelty to animals, including a rabbit as he or she was skinned alive, rabbits as they flailed and screamed while their ears were cut off and as they were set on fire, a dog as he or she was burned with a clothes iron, a monkey and several dogs as they were repeatedly hit in the eye with the sharp end of a stiletto heel, and puppies as they were crushed until they vomited their own internal organs."

Safe haven: Monkeys sent to sanctuary in Texas

A representative of Animal Rescue Corps carries a monkey to safety as another ARC worker closes the cage in which it was confined. The cages violated state laws, according to the ARC.
(Animal Rescue Corps photo)
Four monkeys removed from a Frank Martin Road residence are being given a new home in Texas.

Primarily Primates, a non-profit group near San Antonio, said Friday it will take in the monkeys. The animal sanctuary "operates to house, protect, and rehabilitate various non-native animals," according to its website. Four monkeys were removed from an outbuilding behind the home of Ricky and Wanda Smith on Thursday night after another monkey escaped and bit two people earlier in the day. That monkey was shot to death during an attack on a sheriff's deputy.

Animal Rescue Corps, a non-profit agency based in Washington, D.C., took the animals in partnership with Ady Gil World Conservation. "When responders arrived at the scene they found one Java macaque in a birdcage and one Java macaque in a wire dog crate with 6 square feet of floor space.," a representative of the group said in a press release. "They also found two Rhesus macaques in two approximately 6-foot-high pens with 25 square feet of floor space."

ARC representatives said the conditions under which the monkeys were kept violate state laws. "The cages were inadequate in terms of safe containment and quality of life and in violation of Tennessee animal cruelty laws," the ARC press release said. "The monkeys had no form of enrichment and no access to food or water," ARC President Scotlund Haisley said. "The social, emotional and physical toll this has taken on them is obvious."

The monkeys were taken to a holding area at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds in Nashville. Veterinarians were to examine the monkeys and provide any needed treatment before transfer to Texas, the ARC said.

Stockton Calif. man arrested for killing puppy after girlfriend refuses sex

Baxter

After a night of drinking, 30-year-old Daniel Baxter decided he would play his girlfriend a visit in hopes for some coitus (look it up folks). It being 5 o’clock in the morning, she naturally rebuffed his advances. Baxter’s response? He picked up her two-month-old puppy and threw it against the wall, causing injuries so severe it later had to be euthanized.

Charlotte Greene, Baxter’s now ex-girlfriend, called paramedics for help with her injured puppy but the Stockton Police arrived instead. They escorted her and “Feisty”, the red-nosed pit bull to an emergency veterinarian, but the brutal attack was too much for the small dog to bear. Feisty suffered broken ribs, bruises, a broken jaw, and fatal brain trauma, according to reports. Baxter was arrested for animal cruelty and for violating his parole. He is ineligible for bail and is due in court tomorrow. Greene says that she hopes Baxter stops drinking and enrolls in an anger management program.

Man charged with killing cat, abusing another

Ethan Phillip Weibman went to the Maryland SPCA, and from the dozens of cats, police say, he chose a short-haired one named Lucy to adopt. He returned to the shelter two days later with the cat — dead, according to authorities. And, they said, he wanted another one. Shelter officials refused, and later, when they determined that the cat had died of a traumatic blast wound to the chest that left her unable to breathe, and suffered bruising on her head, Weibman was charged in the animal's death.

The 20-year-old, a short-time Baltimore resident originally from an affluent town in Westchester County, N.Y., is scheduled to go on trial this fall on charges of animal cruelty resulting in death, mutilating an animal and animal cruelty. Baltimore police also charged him with additional criminal counts related to the beating of another cat — two weeks after authorities say he had brought Lucy's body back to the SPCA. Court documents say Weibman is a suspect in the deaths of five more cats and kittens.

In the two years since a pit bull named Phoenix was doused with gasoline and set on fire, a case that cast a light on Baltimore's animal abuse problem, city police, prosecutors and public officials have been treating cruelty cases with new found gravity The Weibman case stands apart from others because of its suspected serial nature and the background of the suspect: a well-to-do young man who grew up in a million-dollar home, attended Hampshire College, lists David Foster Wallace and Hunter S. Thompson among his favorite writers on his Facebook page, and whiled away the time before a recent court hearing by paging through a science magazine.

Wisconsin man caught in sting trying to sell dog for fights

MAYWOOD, Ill. (CBS) - A man came all the way from Wisconsin to sell his pit bull for dogfighting, and he likely won't be going home anytime soon. Al "Boogie" Clemons, 54, of Racine, Wis., was charged earlier this week with selling a dog for the purpose of fighting, a felony. His bond was set at $30,000 on Wednesday, according to the Cook County Sheriff's office.

Sheriff's police were tipped off that Clemons was trying to sell a 41-pound female pit bull to use in fights. An undercover officer called Clemons, who allegedly told him the dog had already won two fights and had a bloodline of champions, the sheriff's office said. Clemons allegedly described the dog's style as "face fighting," that is, she would attack the head and face of her opponent in a fight to leave the other dog incapacitated. Clemons offered $1,500 for the dog, and agreed to deliver it on Tuesday. Clemons arrived with the dog as promised at the Miller Meadows Forest Preserve just outside Maywood, sheriff's police said. He met the undercover officer in the forest preserve, but before going ahead with the sale, he displayed the pit bull's fighting skills by "rolling" her on a chain with another fighting dog nearby, sheriff's police said. Before one of the dogs got hurt, the undercover officer dispatched police and Clemons was arrested. The dog is now in the custody of the Animal Welfare League in Chicago Ridge. Clemons was to return to court for a preliminary hearing at the Maybrook Courthouse in Maywood Friday, according to the sheriff's office.

Thompson charged in Ingham County MI (USA) with ten felony charges for killing dogs.  It makes 13 dogs and 13 felony charges.

24-year-old Andrew David Thompson attending Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine was arraigned this past Wednesday on three felony charges involving animal killings that happened at an apartment in the Lansing, Michigan area last year.   Thompson was also charged in Ingham County courts on ten felony charges for killing dogs at a different apartment complex.  That makes 13 dogs and 13 felony charges, and bail set at $500,000. Police received an anonymous tip that Thompson was bringing dogs to his apartment and killing them. The dogs were allegedly Italian Greyhounds and the killings began back in October, 2010.   No details were released from the Prosecutor’s office in regards as to how the dogs died, or a motive.  One dog was found at the apartment severely neglected.

Andrew Thompson was suspended from the College of Osteopathic Medicine on June 23 because of the accusations against him. He’s being referred to as “the dog serial killer”.  Comments on blogs and news sites compare him to the usual serial killers such as Jeffrey Dahmer and Ted Bundy.  You know, the ones that perfected their craft on animals before graduating to humans. But I didn’t see those killers when I looked at Thompson’s mug shot.  I saw another serial killer – young Hannibal Lecter.

Prosecuting Attorney is Stuart Dunnings III.

Ohio County Sheriff's Deputy Fired After Dog Buried Incident

Posted: Jul 13, 2011 4:57 AM

Updated: Jul 13, 2011 6:15 AM

An Ohio County deputy sheriff is looking for a new job after he was fired following the uproar caused when he apparently buried a dog alive. The sheriff says he has fired a deputy of five years, Randy Taylor. The investigation started a couple of weeks ago when highway workers found an injured dog after it was hit by a car on KY 62 near the Beaver Dam. An official with the group called "The Friends of the Ohio County Animal Shelter" alleges deputy Taylor tried to kill the dog with a garden tool, then buried it on the side of the road.

Three days later, the dog was found wandering near the road. It is currently being treated by a vet. After a two-week internal investigation, Taylor was fired. The criminal investigation is now being reviewed by the county attorney's office. They will determine if Taylor will face any criminal charges.

The sheriff says he's getting phone calls from people across the nation and even in Canada from people upset about what happened to the dog.

Hundreds of Dogs Rescued from Alleged Puppy Mill

Hundreds of Dogs Rescued from Alleged Puppy Mill
Animal rescue workers in eastern North Carolina have rescued about 300 dogs living in what investigators said was a puppy mill.
Workers from the Humane Society and Wayne County Animal Control raided the property Friday morning in southern Wayne County. They found animals with untreated lacerations and serious skin and eye infections.  Volunteers have placed the dogs in temporary shelters. Most of them are Shih-Tzus, Chihuahuas and Lhasa Apsos The News-Argus of Goldsboro reported the raid occurred after county officials filed a civil injunction Thursday against property owner Virginia Thornton. They allege Thornton was "willfully and intentionally" depriving the animals of a proper living environment.

A hearing for Thornton is scheduled for Tuesday at the Wayne County courthouse.

2 dogs die after an Animal Control Officer leaves them in hot Animal Welfare truck. Joshua Ontiveros is charged with a felony. See Video

By: Magdalena Sharpe. KOB.com 06/08/2011 8:46 AM

Two dogs died after an animal welfare officer left them in a hot truck with no air conditioning Tuesday. The officer had picked up one of those dogs, deemed an aggressive pit-bull, from a home near Carlisle and Montgomery.

At this time the city is investigating the incident as it is not yet clear whether the heat or lack of air conditioning actually killed the dogs. The owner of one of the dogs is looking at filing a lawsuit against the city. The officer is apparently still on the job but is not handling animals until the investigation is complete.

According to the Albuquerque Journal Joshua Ontiveros, 21, left five mixed breed dogs in the car, whose temperature reached nearly 100 degrees. Police told the Journal that two of those dogs died, and say the three others will also likely die. Ontiveros was arrested and booked on five felony counts of extreme cruelty to animals.

Rescuer attempts home neuter in Killeen, TX (US)

Ashley Nicole Miller, a Killeen woman who attempted to run an animal rescue out of her home, is back in Bell County Jail after being arrested a second time on animal cruelty charges. Miller, 26, was arrested Wednesday and charged with cruelty to non-livestock animals. Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke arraigned Miller Thursday, setting her bail at $5,000. Miller was also charged May 5 with cruelty to non-livestock animals, a class-A misdemeanor. The latest charge stems from Miller's apparent attempts to neuter two dogs. An officer from Killeen Police Department observed two dogs with injuries to their genitals resulting from a rubber band being wrapped around the dogs' testicles, a form of castration sometimes used with livestock by cutting off blood circulation.

Woman charged after more than 50 cats found in home

Police have charged a 63-year-old woman with cruelty to animals after more than 50 cats were found roaming inside her home near Mt. Pleasant Rd. and Eglinton Ave. E. on Monday. The OSPCA seized the cats one day after a pollster going door to door called police over the odour emanating from the Manor Rd. home. Neighbours, who had complained for years about the state of the house, watched as emergency crews broke down the back door when the homeowner didn’t answer. Inside, firefighters found that the urine and feces causing the stench had also buckled the floorboards. The two-storey brick house, still surrounded by yellow police tape Monday evening, is no longer habitable, said an officer on the scene.

The homeowner, identified by neighbors as Diane Way, is reportedly staying with a friend and could not be reached for comment. Property records show that Way purchased the home in 1993 with a man neighbors say was her former husband. She took sole possession in 2004.

OSPCA spokeswoman Alison Cross said veterinarians are examining the cats, which are suffering from eye and respiratory problems. She said the investigation is ongoing and Way could be charged under the provincial animal welfare act as well as criminally. Police have also charged Way with causing or permitting unnecessary suffering to animals. She will make her first court appearance in June.

Man Enters Plea On Eight Animal Cruelty Charges

May 15, 2011

A Century man has pleaded no contest to eight animal cruelty charges related to the December seizure of several malnourished dogs and horses from his property.

Willie Lee Jones, 54, entered the no contest plea to three counts of cruelty to animals and five counts of confinement of animals without sufficient food, water or exercise. Two additional confinement charges were dropped by prosecutors. Judge Thomas Dannheisser withheld adjudication on all charges and set a sentencing hearing for later this month. Jones remains free on bond.

On December 22, 2010, Escambia County Animal Control, Panhandle Equine Rescue and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office seized at least six dogs and four horses from Jones’ home at 6420 North Century Boulevard, just south of Tedder Road. One of the dogs, a pit bull, was found chained to a piece of post, according to the Sheriff’s Office incident report. Another, also a pit bull, was found in a cage by itself with open sores on its body. A female pit bull was found with three puppies. The puppies were playful and appeared to be of reasonable health, according to the reporting deputy, but the mother’s ribs and hips were clearly visible.

Two of the pit bulls were euthanized due to their poor health, according to Escambia County Animal Control. The other animals are all recovering after receiving veterinary care. One of the horses was stabled by himself in what deputies described as “an old dilapidated building”. “The horse was standing on a thick layer of manure that coated the entire floor of the stall,” according to the Sheriff’s Office report.  There was no food or water for the horse.

A man that lives on the property told deputies that he had fed and watered the horses shortly before authorities arrived, but it was the last of the food. He said that Jones was due to purchase more food and hay for the horses the following day. Deputies found another horse  in small enclosure standing in a pile of manure that was several inches thick. None of the horses on the property had food or hay, and several lacked adequate water, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

This really makes me mad. Urggggg stupid woman! They trust us to help them not hurt them, even if I lost my temper. Option- Walk away !!!!

An Animal Rescuer Beats A Dog

Here is 41-year-old Noelle Stanbridge.  She is an independent animal rescuer from Ottumwa Iowa.   She promotes herself as a champion for stray dogs in Iowa, rescuing over 200 dogs.  If you Google her name you can see her involved in transporting animals with the help of Pilots N Paws, fostering dogs that go to breed-specific rescues, and even setting up petitions.  But…ten days ago her neighbor released to the police a very disturbing and horrific video.  Stanbridge was beating a dog in her back yard, with what appeared to be a stick. Here is a news video on it which shows a significant part of her beating the dog.  And it is disturbing. (See Below)

According to Stanbridge, she was disciplining her dog for digging holes in the backyard.   This wasn’t discipline or positive training.  This is clear cut abuse.  If you watched the video, that dog was clearly terrified and struggling to get away from her.  Stanbridge was wailing on that poor animal violently.

Noelle Stanbridge was arrested and charged with one count of cruelty to animals.  According to Iowa state law, if you beat your own dog and it does not suffer serious injuries, it’s just a simple misdemeanor.  She faces a mere 500 dollar fine. This woman has severe anger issues and should have no animals in her possession.  Noelle Stanbridge, the animal “rescuer”, has a new honor now.  A Pet-Abuse.com profile. Puppy thrown, resulting in death Fridley, MN (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Mar 24, 2011

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Holly Colleen Boyd

Holly Colleen Boyd was already in a bad mood when Fridley police came to her apartment last week to break up a domestic incident involving a male friend with whom she lives. Police advised her friend to hang out someplace else until things cooled down. But 45 minutes later, the friend received a disturbing text from Boyd, according to criminal charges filed Monday. "The dogs killed. It also broke it's neck I think," she said.

When the friend returned to the apartment, he found their newly purchased Chihuahua puppy in its bed, limp and bleeding from its ear, the charges said. The skull was broken in several places and its bowels protruded from its belly. Boyd, 28, was charged with felony animal cruelty. She told police she was mad at the puppy because it urinated on her leg and the couch, so she threw it at a dresser in front of her couch, the charges said. Police said she showed no remorse when explaining the dog's death.
Boyd's friend called police and told them his puppy was dead. Officers questioned Boyd, who initially said the puppy ran into the leg of a coffee table, the complaint said. She then admitted she got mad after the puppy urinated on her leg and the couch, "so she picked the dog up and violently threw it" at the hutch/dresser that was in front of the couch, the complaint said. The puppy hit the hutch/dresser in the handle area and then went limp. She threatened to sue the police for false arrest when they brought her to jail in connection with the puppy's death, the complaint said. She is scheduled to appear in court April 21.

367 dogs were moved to a hog barn at Richwood Fairgrounds in northern Union County Ohio.

By Valerie Lough, Staff Writer Updated 10:33 AM Tuesday, March 1, 2011

SPRINGFIELD — Clark County officials on Tuesday found 76 dead dogs at a local shelter that was declared a public nuisance by the Clark County Combined Health District last week. The dogs, along with 367 that are alive, had been housed in hog barns at One More Chance Rescue and Adoption, 8393 Lower Valley Pike. Fifteen cats were also found. The Health District declared the shelter a public nuisance after an investigation revealed deteriorating conditions for the animals, including a rat infestation, large amounts of garbage, feces and urine and poor air quality. The Columbus Dispatch reported Tuesday that the dogs that were taken from One More Chance have been moved to a hog barn at the Richwood Fairgrounds in northern Union County in central Ohio.

The cause or causes of the animals’ death is unknown, and charges could be filed against shelter operator Jeff Burgess pending further investigation, officials said. “The investigation is still open. We will follow through with it,” said Clark County Humane Society Executive Director James Straley. Recently, Piqua authorities confiscated 100 dogs at a shelter Burgess, 56, operated in that city.

Eleven criminal charges — including nine related to cruelty to animals — were filed by the Piqua Health Department against him. Clark County officials initially arranged to transport the animals to the Madison County Fairgrounds; however, logistical and communication problems derailed that plan, Biles said. Among those problems were zoning and property use issues, said Steve Hume, London city safety and service director.

A Clark County Humane Society Rescue Fund has been set up for the animals. Cash or check donations can be made at any Security National Bank.

Turner woman in Oregon is arrested after Marion County  seizes 3 horses and 14 starving llamas

A Marion County Sheriff's deputy arrested the owner of three malnourished horses and 14 starving llamas seized from a farm just outside of Stayton on Wednesday morning. It was the fourth seizure of neglected farm animals in Marion County this year.  Mikerrra Lee Lane, 35, was taken into custody at her home on Duckflat Road SE in Turner on Thursday evening. Lane was booked at the Marion County Jail on 15 counts of animal neglect.

The seized horses are receiving care at the Lighthouse Animal Sanctuary in Scio. The llamas are under the care of volunteers at the Willamette Valley Llama is scheduled Association. It is anticipated that their recovery will take months.

Lane will appear in court at 9:30 a.m. According to the sheriff's office, Senior Deputy Brenda Lumley seized a malnourished colt from this same farm in January. She offered the owners resources and options to avoid further seizures. "We really try to work with animal owners to avoid having to seize their animals. There are options available. Owners who can't care for their animals shouldn't delay action." Lumley said.  Unfortunately, the remaining animal's conditions continued to deteriorate, according to the sheriff's office. Lumley had photographs of the animals examined by a veterinarian. As a result of that examination, Judge Dale Penn issued a search warrant authorizing their seizure.

The llamas and horses were in poor condition, rating 1-3 on a body condition evaluation with 1 being the poorest condition and 9 being the best. They were suffering from skin conditions, parasite infestations, rain rot and abscessed hooves.  Volunteers from the Willamette Valley Llama Association, and the Marion County Sheriff's Posse assisted with the seizure. The Brand Inspector's Office for the State of Oregon provided needed portable equipment to corral the animals until they could be transported to rescue organizations.

The Lighthouse Animal Sanctuary in Scio was again called upon to care for the horses. Director Wayne Geiger urged owners who are unable to care for animals they own to seek help. "These horses don't need a lot; just some basic care and feeding. If you suspect a medical condition, call a veterinarian. Many will offer advice over the phone at no cost.
"The Oregon Hay Bank  in Gresham offers hay and feed assistance. Rescue Blankets in Sandy Oregon provides recycled horse blankets to needy owners".  Funding for these organizations comes from donations.   Anyone faced with the inability to care for their horses or farm animals can contact Senior Deputy Lumley for advice or assistance in connecting with resources.

Teen Burglar Kills Goldfish To Eliminate Witnesses

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Illinois ——- An ignorant teen burglar who killed his victim’s goldfish because he ‘didn’t want to leave any witnesses’ was charged with animal cruelty and burglary in suburban Illinois. The unidentified 16-year-old boy along with his two teenage accomplices aged 15, and 17 were charged with burglary and animal cruelty for their role in a Jan. 24 break-in. The victims of the break-in, returned home to find their fish floating dead at the top of their tank, which had been filled with mustard, ketchup and spices.

A local police officer explained the reasoning behind the assassination. Sgt Mike Hernandez told the Daily Herald: ‘As a matter of fact, it’s a little disturbing. According to the police report, he looked at the fish tank and said: “We can’t leave any witnesses.” “He wasn’t remorseful,” Hernandez said. “Certainly something they didn’t need to do.” The burglars targeted the apartment because they knew it had been evacuated after a Jan. 19 fire, Hernandez said. According to police, they pried open a door and stole a video game system, CD player, 30 video games, 30 DVDs, a BB gun, jewelry and a safe.

Police were able to track down some of the stolen items the boys sold to local pawn shops, Hernandez said. Perhaps these teen morons should consider going back to school. Anyone with half-a-brain could tell you fish only have a 3-second memory and don’t possess the brains or vocal cords to produce speech. Duh!

(Best picture of Nally and the house of horrors)

Jeffrey Nally Jr. of New Cumberland West Virginia held his recent girlfriend captive in a farm house and forced her to watch the torture and murder of over 30 dogs he got from “free to good home” ads.

Luckily she managed to call her mother on Thursday, which led to the West Virginia State Police and Hancock County SWAT team to safely remove the girl and take Jeffrey into custody. The remains of 29 dogs were found on the property late that day. The dog warden found and rescued “one pig and three dogs; a Poodle, a black Lab and a Coon hound” according to West Virginia’s channel 7 news.

Man Faces Animal Cruelty Charges After Severely Injured Horse Discovered

Officials were forced to euthanize the horse because its injuries were so severe

Severely Injured Horse Found At Mira Loma Home (LOS ANGELES TIMES

MIRA LOMA (KTLA) -- A Riverside County man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of felony animal abuse after authorities discovered a severely injured horse and more than 100 illegal cockfighting roosters at his home. The horse had ruptured tendons and its injuries were so severe, officials were forced to euthanize the animal.  40-year-old Francisco Javier Ponce is also suspected of running a cockfighting operation out of his Mira Loma home on the 6000 block of Marlatt Street.

The illegal cocks were also euthanized, according to officials at the Riverside Co. Dept. of Animal Services.

Plus this was found too:

A Mira Loma man was arrested Tuesday after Riverside County Animal Services was called in to euthanize an injured horse and more than 100 cockfighting roosters.
Francisco Javier Ponce, 40, was taken into custody on suspicion of felony animal cruelty. Animal Services officers arrested Ponce at his home in the 6000 block of Marlatt Street, after failing to provide veterinary care for a horse that was suffering from ruptured tendons in its back right leg, said John Welsh, spokesman for Riverside County Animal Services.
The injuries to the animal were so severe, Riverside County Animal Services chief veterinarian was called in to euthanize the horse, Welsh said.  During the animal cruelty investigation, Animal Services officers discovered more than 100 cockfighting roosters, which are illegal in the state. Cockfighting paraphernalia was also found including blades used in cockfights, Welsh said. Possession of these types of blades can be prosecuted as a misdemeanor in Riverside County Superior Court.  Because the Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter does not adopt fighting birds, all of the roosters would have to be humanely euthanized, Welsh said.  Ponce was booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center by Riverside County sheriff's deputies. The case will presented to the Riverside County District Attorney's office as a felony animal cruelty matter, Welsh said.

Brute batters tiny pup: SAD END: Spotty the Chihuahua had to be put down after a beating in Queens NY

By LORENA MONGELL I and LEN MANIACE Last Updated: 7:02 AM, February 19, 2011 Posted: 2:08 AM, February 19, 2011

SAD END: Spotty the Chihuahua had to be put down after a beating.

A 265-pound Queens man savagely beat his 8-pound Chihuahua to a pulp -- and then refused to pay the money needed to save the pup, ASCPA officials and his wife said. Jerry Melendez, 33, allegedly took his rage out on his defenseless dog, Spotty, on Feb. 10, striking him with enough force to fracture his skull and cause a hemorrhage to the poor pup's left eye. Ultimately, the dog had to be euthanized. "It appears he was just frustrated and became angry at his family dog," said ASPCA Assistant Director Joe Pentangelo. After the alleged assault in Ridgewood, Melendez rushed 5-year-old Spotty to a private animal hospital, where doctors desperately tried treating him for seizures and head trauma.

SAD END: Spotty the Chihuahua had to be put down after a beating.

But when told he'd have to cough up $5,800 to get the proper treatment at a Manhattan vet, Melendez refused, saying he couldn't afford it, according to his wife, Lillian Vargas. Veterinarians claim they were left with no choice but to euthanize the poor abused pooch. They notified the ASPCA, and a necropsy determined Spotty died of blunt-force impact. Vargas later concocted a ridiculous story to defend her husband, who is facing two years in the slammer for felony animal cruelty. She claimed that the towering man merely yelled at the defenseless dog for pooping on the couch and that its injuries were self-inflicted. "He got up at 5 [a.m.] to go to the bathroom," she said. "He must have smelled the poop on the couch. He yelled at the dog, and the dog jumped off and ran into the leg of the dining-room table."Melendez didn't have the money to save the pup because he lost his job at a pharmacy, said Vargas, 32. She then professed her man's undying love for the animal he tortured. "He loved the dog," she said. "He literally has not stopped crying. He had no intention of hurting the dog." Despite the excuses, Melendez was charged and, besides prison, faces the possibility of a $2,000 fine. "It's a serious arrest with serious consequences," Pentangelo said of the ASPCA's first felony arrest of the year.

FloriDUH  Weird, wacky, strange news from the Sunshine State Newspaper  Man accused of sexually assaulting a Chihuahua mix

mug_Bautista.bmp   Tomas Bautista, 40, was arrested Thursday on a charge of sexually assaulting his roommate's dog in Oakland Park, the Broward Sheriff's Office said Friday, reports the Sun-Sentinel in South Florida. Bautista, of Oakland Park, was charged with a single count of cruelty to an animal, a third-degree felony, said Dani Moschella, sheriff's spokeswoman. Florida is one of about a dozen states with no law specifically banning sex with animals, records show.

Mimi_dog.jpg

The 3-year-old female Chihuahua mix, named Mimi, is recovering, her owner, Clemente Velasquez, 67, told the Sun-Sentinel on Friday afternoon. After being treated by a veterinarian, "she is now just lying down on the sofa," Velasquez said. "She's not happy like she normally is." According to the Sheriff's Office: Velasquez arrived home Thursday and found Bautista drunk. He told him to go to bed, but Bautista instead went to the backyard. The dog followed him outside. Soon after, Velasquez heard Mimi yelp, so he grabbed a flashlight and ran outside. He saw his dog running from Bautista and found Bautista passed out with his pants down. Mimi was bleeding, so Velasquez notified authorities and took her to the Coral Springs Animal Hospital.

When rescuers saved this three-year-old Scottish terrier from the small, stench-filled house where he had been kept along with more than 100 others, he was in a sorry state. But after just two days of love and care - and a good wash and brush - he looks like a completely different dog, with a new name to match: Montgomery. Little Monty was one of 118 malnourished dogs found living in two feet of faeces, urine and rubbish in a squalid house in Medina County, Ohio after neighbours reported ceaseless barking and foul odours coming from the alleged illicit breeding facility.

Before and After: With a bit of grooming, three-year-old Montgomery brushes up into a neat and sleek dog with a 'cute little grin' . Its owners, Glenda Curtis, 54 and her daughter Danielle Tschappat, 27, each now face 20 charges of animal cruelty and failing to give them food and water - second-degree misdemeanours which could result in a jail term. Mary Jo Johnson, acting humane officer for the Medina County Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals, told WKYC.com: 'All you saw were dogs. Dogs on the counter-tops. Dogs on top of cabinets. Faeces, garbage about 24 inches deep on the first level.' The dogs, including Monty,  are now being cared for at the Medina County SPCA rescue centre. Its executive director, Stephanie Moore, said: 'Monty's a cute little guy and he gives you this funny little grin - he really has a great personality.'

He Was Barking… So I Kept Stabbing Him Until He Stopped – VIDEO

This is what 59-year-old Herman Sayles told the police last Thursday after he walked into the Clairton Police Department in PA about his Boxer, Tyson.  “I just killed my dog. He was barking and would not stop so I kept stabbing him until he stopped,” said Sayles.

When police investigated, they found the boxer, Tyson, in the basement in a dog crate, severely bleeding from the neck and chest. Tyson was lucky, he underwent surgery and is now recovering at home with Jackie Wade, Sayles girlfriend and Tyson’s owner. Sayles has reportedly moved from the home. “Apparently, the offender was going for the neck and missed the jugular by not very much,” said Kathy Hecker, an Animal Friends Humane officer. “How close did this dog come to dying? The veterinarians and I felt that if it had been a different breed, it probably would be dead.” Sayles has been charged with animal cruelty.

100 Sled Dogs Slaughtered Outdoor Adventures Whistler, located in the Soo Valley north of Whistler, British Columbia, Canada

100 sled dogs were slaughtered “Exectution Style” in April 2010, all in the name of “business”.

Outdoor Adventures Whistler, located in the Soo Valley north of Whistler, British Columbia, Canada, anticipated a booming post-Olympics business with their Sled Dog tours. It didn’t happen. With 300 sled dogs and slumping business, it was decided to reduce their “herd” of sled dogs. There were too many dogs and not enough tourists. Some were rehomed, but not many. Then some creep up the corporate ladder decided most had to go – any which way possible. An employee ( Joey  Houssian ) of Howling Dog Tours Whistler (a subsidiary of Outdoor Adventures Whistler) killed the dogs last April. The dogs were either shot or had their throats slit and dumped into a mass grave. This worker received compensation for post-traumatic stress from WorkSafeBC (Workers Comp), and it was that inspection report that somehow managed to get into the hands of the RCMP and the B.C. SPCA. I’m just going to print an account that was published in the Vancouver Sun. http://www.vancouversun.com/news/Tourism+lull+execution+style+killings+sled+dogs+Reports/4197883/story.html

The Investigation is HOT! VIDEO

This horrific story has gripped the hearts of so many since it has come to light, the brutal slaughter of 100 sled dogs, healthy animals, just to “cull the herd”, for “economical” reasons.  In others words, money and greed again.  Now that this has come out the investigations have begun hot and heavy.

A task force has been appointed by Premier Gordon Campbell. Said task-force will include the B.C. SPCA and will be headed by Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Dr. Terry Lake to investigate and within 45 days forward their findings to the Minister of Agriculture. “The tragic and disturbing details that have emerged around how these dogs were inhumanely treated are not acceptable to British Columbians or to their government,” Campbell said in a release. “No creature should ever have to suffer in the manner that has been reported, and we want to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again in our province.”

Huge Man Beat Tiny Puppy to Death During Argument with Girlfriend

Yes, we have yet another winner here.  This is Dwayne R. Johnson, 34, Madison, WI.  This beast and yes, I do mean beast; 6’1″, 530 lbs., decided during an argument with his girlfriend on December 14 over the ownership of a puppy, that if he couldn’t have it, no one would.  He then proceeded to beat the tiny 4-6 week old female pitbull puppy to death with a large flashlight.

Witnesses were afraid to step in to save the puppy because of the size of the beast and the vicious angry rage he was in. When vets examined the puppy they found that she died as a result of “massive head trauma as well as rib fractures,” which punctured the puppy’s lungs after being beaten about the head and body with the blunt instrument. Johnson has been arrested on a charge of Mistreatment of Animal Causing Death, a class E Felony.

Then there’s the question of what is a tiny puppy like that even doing away from it’s mother?! OMG! You see people like this and hear about crimes like this and you wonder why pitties wound up with the reps they have.  Just imagine what kind of a life that poor baby would have had under this monster’s tutelage, what he would have tried to turn that baby into…

Dog doused in gasoline, set on fire Baltimore, MD (US)  Another Shot at Justice for Phoenix February 10th, 2011 |

Nearly two years after her death, Phoenix remains an enduring symbol and the face of animal cruelty victims nationwide—what’s more, the senseless attack served as a catalyst for change in Baltimore. With support from the ASPCA, the city created the Baltimore Anti-Animal Abuse Advisory Commission in November 2010. The commission, whose members include Dr. Randall Lockwood, ASPCA Senior Vice President of Forensic Sciences and Anti-Cruelty Projects, has pledged to provide training on animal cruelty to law enforcement, prosecutors and judges throughout Maryland.

A city police officer describes it as one of the worst things she's ever seen. A pit bull was set on fire in northwest Baltimore and no one was coming to to the dog's aid. They've named her Phoenix, for rising out of the ashes. She would have been euthanized immediately, but a special fund at BARCS provided immediate, expensive care to keep her alive. The one-year-old pit bull should not be alive after someone doused her in gasoline and set her on fire Wednesday afternoon."She was fully in flames. There were people around but nobody was doing anything, so I got out of the car, took off my sweater and started hitting her to put the fire out," Officer Teel said. "The pads of her feet and burnt off and she's standing on them, walking to people and still wagging her tail," said BARCS Executive Director Jennifer Mead-Brause.
The case drew national attention and outrage from animal welfare advocates shocked by the brutality of the attack May 27, 2009, in West Baltimore. The female dog, later nicknamed Phoenix by rescue workers, was doused in accelerant, set alight and left to burn to death. A Baltimore police officer found her and put out the flames, but Phoenix didn't survive. She was euthanized five days later.

Another Shot at Justice for Phoenix

There may be another attempt to bring the Johnson Twins back to trial.  Baltimore prosecutors are holding a series of meetings to determine whether to retry the animal cruelty case against twin brothers Travers and Tremayne Johnson, which ended in mistrial.  If the case is retried, it won’t be immediate. A May 4 date has been set aside at the city courthouse in case prosecutors decide to retry the case.

UPDATE 2/11/2011: Baltimore’s state’s attorney announced that the twin brothers accused of setting a pit bull on fire in 2009 will be retried.  The new trial is scheduled for May 4 2011.  YES! After the trial, the judge issued gag order in the case that prevents prosecutors and police from discussing any future plans.  We won’t know anything until the prosecutors make a formal announcement on the decision. Now is our chance. Your polite requests for a retrial can be sent here:

PROLIFIC POACHER AND BROTHER FACE PRISON

Very good message to send out and a good start.. Deer Poaching will not be tolerated.

HARRISBURG – A Dec. 11 poaching incident has two Lebanon County brothers facing possible prison sentences, including one who has the unfortunate distinction of being the first individual to be charged with felony counts under a new Game and Wildlife Code penalty structure that took effect in September, according to Pennsylvania Game Commission officials.

Game Commission Wildlife Conservation Officer Derek Daly charged William M. Kirkwood, 50, of Camp Strauss Road, Bethel, with unlawfully killing seven deer in 2010 and four deer in 2009, fleeing an officer and trespassing, among other things, for which he faces total fines and penalties of up to $64,000 and 10 years in prison.  WCO Daly also charged Kirkwood’s brother, Theodore P. Kirkwood, 54, of Heilmandale Road, Lebanon, for aiding and abetting his brother, fleeing an officer and trespassing, for which he faces total fines and penalties of up to $5,000 and nine months in prison.

All charges were filed on Tuesday, Jan. 18, before District Judge Michael Smith in Cleona.

According to WCO Daly, on Dec. 11, he received information about possible hunting violations on the Lebanon Landfill property. Responding to the area, along with Deputy WCO Brian Sheetz, the officers were met by witnesses at the scene, who informed the officers of an individual who they had seen hunting without orange on and that they suspected he had killed several deer.

“The witnesses identified the individual as William Kirkwood,” WCO Daly said. “They also said they believed Kirkwood hunts the Lebanon Landfill without orange and uses an ATV to recover the deer.
