Your long lost dog twin is waiting!

Ever notice that dogs and their people often look alike? Maybe they both have a big goofy smile, sad puppy dog eyes, or long blond hair … If you’ve ever wondered if there’s a dog out there who could be your twin, now there’s a fun way to find out!

Available for both iPhone and Android, the "My Dog ID" is a free, easy-to-use mobile phone app that will find your canine clone in no time flat. You’ll probably even find more than one match! And when you do, you can share their photos with your friends on Twitter, Facebook or the Dog Wall at the Best Friends Invisible Dogs website.

The new My Dog ID mobile app also lets you search for invisible dogs— dogs near you in shelters and rescues who are waiting to be seen and adopted by someone just like you! And, by sharing their photos, you can help others start seeing invisible dogs, too. Who knows, maybe you or one of your friends will fall in love at first sight and give an invisible dog a good home!

Please give this new phone app a try and help spread the word about invisible dogs in your community. Together we can bring about a time when there are No More Homeless Pets®.

ASPCA Mobile App Gives You the Weather With a Side of Cute

PetWeather AppWe can’t make this winter weather any easier to endure, but we can make it a little more fun to read about—with pet care tips and pictures of really cute animals, of course! Our brand-new “PetWeather” app is totally free, and owners of iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and Android-platform phones can download it right now.

PetWeather uses GPS or a zip code you provide to give you a three-day forecast. It’ll tell you how the local weather could affect your furry friends and what steps you should take to protect them. Should the weather become dangerous for your pets, PetWeather will send you an alert to make sure you stay in-the-know. And if your future looks like a lot of snow, rain and sleet, don’t let it get you down; each forecast comes with an awww-inspiringly adorable animal picture related to the weather. (A Pug in a raincoat? Yes, please.) Plus, once you’ve downloaded PetWeather, you’ll get News Alert sent right to your phone.

To download our free app, visit our PetWeather page at ASPCA.org. You can download the app right to your phone, or download it to your desktop and load it onto your phone the next time you sync!

Put 100 Big Cats in Your Pocket with a phone App.

Big Cat AppHey Tampa, Lisa with Parner Pulse here with an update on one of our more unique Tampa Florida Attractions.

Big Cat Rescue has just released their very own iTunes App. The Big Cat app features instant access to the hundreds of amazing animals at the Big Cat sanctuary right here in Tampa.

With the App you will get photos of lions, tigers, leopards, bobcats, servals and many other unique cats that you may not have known existed! It will of course have tons of images (all of which I'm sure are amazing), that you can use for backgrounds on your phone or even share with friends.

The app only costs $1.99 and majority of that goes to Big Cat Rescues sanctuary. This app also gives you a chance to keep up with the advocacy campaigns Big Cat Rescue is part of, and help spread the word about what they do.

Big Cat Rescue is a hidden gem in Tampa, and if you have a free afternoon it is completely worth it to stop by. I have been and LOVED every second. The animals are beautiful, and the staff is amazing. I learned a lot about the Big Cats here in Florida and all across the United States.  Help support Big Cat Rescue and purchase their app today! (Droid users, they are working on one for you too!)
That's all for now, but I'll be sure to keep you posted on Tampa Florida News, and other great Thing To Do In Tampa Bay!

EV Charging for your car – There’s An App for That

Do you have range anxiety (the fear that an electric vehicle will run out of power before reaching your destination and leave you stranded)?

Silicon Valley startup Xatori wants to soothe your electric vehicle (EV) concerns with its new free iPhone app. Released today, the PlugShare app will connect EV enthusiasts, so they can share their home chargers and household electrical outlets to charge each other’s EVs. Charging an EV at another PlugShare user’s home is a convenient way to “top off” the battery when drivers are not close to a public charging station. EV owners will continue to fully charge their batteries at home, says Xatori co-founder Armen Petrosian, and PlugShare’s community will serve as a “backup network.” Power outlet in the garage? No problem; drivers can call or text to make an appointment to charge their EV. The app also includes a database of public charging stations that are compatible with all EV models, including the new Nissan LEAF and Chevy Volt. The company is currently working on a version of the app for Android phones.

Don’t have an EV? You can still sign up for PlugShare to let EV owners charge at your home. To read more:  http://earth911.com/news/2011/03/07/ev-charging-theres-an-app-for-that/

SlickApp

PlugShare is a community-driven electric vehicle (EV) charging network that lets you share your outlet and connect with other EV enthusiasts.

  • Eliminates range anxiety
  • Don't need an EV or special outlet to sign up
  • Comprehensive database of public charging stations
  • Did we mention it's free?

Our Causes: PAW JUSTICE FOOD BANK

Keeping Animals Out of Shelters

Financial hardship is one of the main reasons why some animals end up in animal shelters. The problem is that while owners love their pet, financial circumstances beyond their control, force them to place their beloved pets in a shelter. The family pet is the first one to suffer.  Paw Justice has received many requests asking for assistance with this issue and now we are able to help. Paw Justice has created the first official Paw Justice Pet Food Bank for this country.  Our aim is to keep pets out of animal shelters, concrete areas with metal bars are no place for any animal, and to help families in need, so that they can still take care of their pets.

Paw Justice discovered during their fight against animal abuse that there is  a large amount of people who take animals under their wing, and out of the kindness of their hearts and wallets provide these pets with an opportunity for a better life.  They are the unsung heroes  of animal rescue who never get acknowledged for their efforts.  We believe these people need support for their acts of kindness and so we are  focusing our efforts on supplying food  and resources to help them.

The Paw Justice Food Bank also supplies food to the major animal shelters eg.: SPCA, Dogwatch, Lonely Miaow Mastiff rescue group plus many more

How the Paw Justice Food Bank Works

Paw Justice accumulates and stores pet food through donations.  When our stocks are low we are able to purchase supplies from pet food manufacturers who help us out, by letting us have it at a reduced cost. Paw Justice distributes or personally delivers our stock to those in need. We are "linked in" to over 70 food depots (outside of animal shelters) who assist and supply pet food to over a thousand families in need. This keeps us connected at ground level so we understand what is happening in our communities. At present Paw Justice is focusing on sending rescue packages down to Christchurch to help pets there in need. As you can imagine this has depleted our supply quite rapidly, so please help us and donate now!

US Postal Service to the Rescue Program!

Today the Animal Rescue/Adopt a Shelter Pet stamps will go on sale at all post offices nationwide.  These stamps are the latest US Postal Service’s social awareness stamps. The US Postal Service is working with Ellen DeGeneres and Halo (her holistic pet care company) to increase public awareness about shelter pets and encourage pet adoption.

And when you buy the stamps, Halo buys the food for one million shelter pets. Check out these beautiful stamps.  Each one of these animals was a shelter pet.  Photographer Sally Anderson-Bruce found these beautiful, adopted pets in her hometown of New Milford, Connecticut. Each of these animals was given a good home thanks to animal rescue shelters and the families who adopted them.  You can view each pet’s bio here at the USPS Stamps to the Rescue website.  Just move your mouse over the picture to read their story.

A dog appears on the stamp, urging humane treatment in the name of millions of dogs and other domestic and wild animals in the United States.  Artist Norman Todhunter designed this stamp. The US Postal Service has had a long-time tradition of raising public awareness of social issues.  With these stamps and the generosity of Halo Pet Products, hopefully more animals will make their way out of the shelters and into warm and loving homes.  By Andrea, on April 30th, 2010 |

  ASPCA®’s Meet Your Match®

You could be gazing at the animal of your dreams, but you just can’t tell what she’s thinking behind that furry face. What if you knew a little something about her personality and habits before you moved in together? The ASPCA’s Meet Your Match program wouldn’t let you go home without knowing who’s in that carrier or on that leash. MYM is the only method in existence today that evaluates an animal’s behavior and interests and matches them to an adopter’s preferences so that you take home a pet you can really click with.

   Canine-ality™ and Puppy-ality™

The Meet Your Match Canine-ality/Puppy-ality assessment begins with an initial MYM SAFER™ (Safety Assessment for Evaluating Rehoming) behavior screening to make sure each pooch is a good candidate for adoption. Dogs are then tested on their friendliness, playfulness, energy level, motivation and drive, and placed into one of nine color-coded Canine- or Puppy-alities. Some pooches are laid-back “Couch Potatoes,” others are curious “Busy Bees,” and then there are the action hero “Go-Getter” types.

As an adopter, you also get a color based on your preferences and lifestyle. On your visit to the adoption facility, you’re given a purple, orange or green guest pass to match the pets who might suit you best. You don’t always have to go with your own color, but at least you’ll know who you’re mixing with!

Each adoptable cat is assessed based on level of interest in play, exploring, “talking,” and being the center of attention so that he or she can be placed into one of the nine color-coded “feline-ality” types that make up the Meet Your Match program. Green cats are savvy and adventurous, orange cats make the perfect companions and purple kitties are quiet, seek affection and stay out of trouble. The color is indicated on the cat’s kennel card, along with a short description, so you’ll know just who you’re dealing with in your quest for your dream kitty.

They have a Pet coverage program

What Is Pet Injury Coverage?

Pets are part of your family, and when you take them with you in the car, they're your passengers, too. So shouldn't they be covered by your auto insurance policy? We think so.  That's why we offer up to $1,000 of coverage for your dog or cat if they're injured or worse when you're in a car accident, or during a fire or theft. And, it's free! That's right. Progressive's Pet Injury coverage is automatically included in your Collision coverage.

When Can You Use Pet Injury Coverage?
If you can use Collision coverage, you can use Pet Injury coverage for pets you or relatives who live with you have. If you're ever in an accident and your dog or cat is injured, Progressive pays up to $1000 towards vet bills and medicine. Coverage also extends to a cat or dog owned by a relative who lives with you. Pet Injury coverage is built in to your Collision coverage — there's no added cost if you choose to use it or not use it. It's just one more way we let you know we care about you and your family, human or otherwise.

Groundbreaking Dog Fighting DNA Database Launched

Earlier this week, the ASPCA announced the launch of the nation's first criminal dog fighting DNA database, known as the Canine CODIS (Combined DNA Index System). Similar to the FBI's human CODIS—a computerized archive that stores the DNA profiles of criminal offenders and crime scene evidence—the Canine CODIS contains the individual DNA profiles of dogs who have been seized during dog fighting investigations and from samples collected at suspected dog fighting venues. This new, state-of-the-art system will provide an essential tool for law enforcement to prosecute dog fighting cases nationwide.

"Dog fighting is a multi-million dollar criminal enterprise that contributes to the cruel treatment and deaths of thousands of dogs nationwide every year," says Tim Rickey, the ASPCA's Senior Director of Field Investigations and Response. "This database is a vital component in the fight against animal cruelty and will allow us to strengthen cases against animal abusers and seek justice for their victims." During an investigation, seized dogs will have their cheeks swabbed, and their DNA will be searched against the Canine CODIS database. Matching results will help law enforcement agencies identify relationships between dogs, and enable investigators to establish connections between breeders, trainers and dog fighters. "Juries expect forensic science to support the evidence that's presented to them, and animal cruelty cases are no exception," says ASPCA Forensic Veterinarian Dr. Melinda Merck, who testifies in animal cruelty cases around the country. "This database breaks new ground in supplying that evidence for dog fighting investigations."

The ASPCA worked in conjunction with the Humane Society of Missouri (HSMO) and the Louisiana SPCA (LA/SPCA) to develop the Canine CODIS. The system will be maintained at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) Veterinary Genetics Laboratory.

For more information on the Canine CODIS database, visit our Crime Scene Investigations section.

Don't want to leave your armchair? No problem!

  • Keep your eyes and ears peeled for animal-related issues and write a letter in support of animal rights to the editor of every magazine or newspaper that you read—your letter might be read by millions of people!
  • Thank publishers and producers for animal-friendly messages on TV and in print.

Poisonous Plant “Pet Safe” App Launches on iTunes

Common plants found in your home, backyard or property are popular for their decorative and air clearing properties, but many species can be toxic to our curious furry friends. Last year, the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center handled more than 140,000 cases of pets exposed to toxic substances—more than 10,000 of which were related to household plants and garden products. Don’t leave it up to Fido or Fluffy to keep themselves safe—stay informed with our new Pet Safe app!

In cooperation with Treviso Media Group, the ASPCA has developed Pet Safe, which is compatible with the iPhone and iPod touch and includes toxic plant information compiled by our team of toxicologists. The application is a great tool when you’re shopping for new houseplants, planning your garden, or checking if the plants in your home or yard are toxic. Pet Safe includes:

  • a searchable database of plants reported to adversely affect the health of dogs, cats and horses;
  • detailed profiles of each plant, including common and scientific names, images and a list of potential symptoms if ingested;
  • information to help you if your pet has ingested something toxic; and
  • one-touch dialing to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.
PetSafe App

Pet Safe is now available in the iTunes Store for the bargain price of $2.99. Download it today using this link, and you’ll always have the life-saving information you need right at your fingertips! (The app is also accessible by searching for the following keywords in the iTunes Store: pets, dogs, cats, horses, plants, flower, ASPCA, toxic, poisonous, first aid, vet, medical and symptoms.)

Please note, the information contained in our plant lists is not meant to be all-inclusive, but rather a compilation of the most frequently encountered plants. As always, if you think your pet is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance, please contact your local veterinarian or our 24-hour emergency poison hotline at (888) 426-4435.
